This project is a book design with a digital experience dedicated to the Guerrilla Girls; An anonymous feminist group of artists who tackle the realities of the art world through statistics, humour, and boldness. A book cover, sample spreads, and then adapting a mobile version were to be designed for an exhibition on their work. Before starting let’s establish their aesthetic:
They’ve consistently taken bold approaches to their work, not at all afraid of the potential shock value.
Their colour palette is usually black and pink.
Humour is often used to prove a point as well, and of course, gorillas are commonly used. Thanks to their unique and prominent style, matching their aesthetic was a really fun process.
The main challenge for this project was to make sure I matched their bold, rule breaking aesthetic without breaking TOO many rules either. I needed to find the right balance from spread to spread. I almost wanted this book to feel a little like a scrap book on the inside and I’m happy with the result. Making the mobile version was a breeze after this, and it became my favourite part of this project. Seeing the content in action was just so satisfying.
