Assigned an album by Laurie Anderson & Kronos Quartet, I had to design a concert poster for the album Landfall, and then design the corresponding vinyl cover. This album consisted of:
A subject matter based on Hurricane Sandy through Laurie Anderson’s point of view.
The subject matter therefore addresses a particularly prominent tone; melancholic, cinematic, and elegiac.
This feeling is conveyed through Laurie Anderson’s lucid spoken words, combined with Kronos Quartet’s classical instrumental, gradually sounding electronic here and there.
To capture the themes of loss and Hurricane Sandy, I wanted to create a dark, broken or washed-up aesthetic. Listening to Laurie Anderson’s lyrics on finding ruined memories, objects or rooms not being the same as they were, I wanted this design to resemble what you’d find washed up in her flooded basement as she describes. Thanks to interesting textures I made using oil, paint, ink and transparent glue, that became the perfect candidate to create the look I wanted.
This project reminded me how digital solutions aren’t always the only option. Playing and experimenting with textures was the star of this beautiful result and I could not have translated my thoughts better without it.
